Rabbits are known for their high reproductive rate. The productivity of Rabbits depends on the breed and size of the animals. Females (does) of small breeds are ready to breed at the age of 5 months, and small males (bucks) reach sexual maturity at 6 months of age. Medium breeds are mature at 6-7 months old; the heavy breeds are mature at 8-9 months. Healthy bucks may breed 7 times a week, sometimes even twice a day. The ideal ratio is one buck to 10 does.
Responsible breeders keep careful records for productivity and show and choose only the best animals for mating. Only animals of the same breed should be bred; otherwise, the offspring to the fourth generation will not be purebred and will not be allowed to take part in shows. Mixed breeds can only be pets or kept for meat.
Never bring the buck to the doe's cage, but rather place the doe to the buck. Otherwise, the male will sniff around the cage restlessly. Do not leave the female in the buck's cage for a night, but rather you can put her to the male's cage again in 2-12 hours after the initial breeding. Between the 10th and 14th day after mating the doe needs a follow up check for pregnancy.
Rabbits of dwarf breed are able to produce about 8 babies per year; small breeds give birth to about 14 babies; medium breeds give birth to 16-18 babies and meat type breeds produce up to 20 babies per year. Every responsible breeder has a breeding schedule for all Rabbits and they will never produce occasional litters.
